Araku valley Indian News Times:10 june Smt. Pachipenta Santhakumari, State General Secretary of the Congress Party, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident at the Visakha Steel Plant on Monday, which resulted in the deaths of several workers and left others critically injured. She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased workers and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
She noted that the Visakha Steel Plant is a national asset created through the struggles of the people of the country. She expressed concern over the recurring accidents at such a vital public sector undertaking, stating that negligence in implementing safety standards, staff shortages, and maintenance failures appear to be the primary causes.
She criticized the Central Government's policies of weakening public sector undertakings, noting that actions such as failing to focus adequately on safety systems, not recruiting necessary technical staff, and cutting maintenance costs are putting workers' lives at risk. She demanded that the family of every worker who died in the accident be paid a minimum compensation of ₹1 crore and provided with a permanent job for one family member. She also requested that housing facilities be provided to each family on two acres of government land. She demanded that the government provide ₹25 lakh in financial assistance to every seriously injured worker and ensure they receive top-tier medical care completely free of cost.
She demanded a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to uncover the root causes of the accident. She urged that criminal cases be registered against the officials responsible for the accident and those accountable for management failures, and that strict action be taken against them.
Furthermore, she demanded a thorough review of safety standards across all departments of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant by an independent committee of experts and insisted that the resulting report be made public.
She made it clear that the Congress party strongly opposes any attempts to privatize the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant or hand it over to corporate entities. She stated that the lives of workers and the future of their families are far more valuable than any corporate profits. She asserted that safeguarding the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and ensuring the safety of its workers is a constitutional obligation of the Central Government.
