Visakhapatnam: Indian News Times:Institute of Medical Sciences (VIIMS) inaugurated a 50 kW (AC) on-grid rooftop solar power plant on July 25, 2024, to promote the use of renewable energy.

This project was installed by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Private Limited under its Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) initiative. The initiative was realized through the special efforts and guidance of the Visakhapatnam District Collector.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of VIIMS Director Dr. V. Manmadha Rao and Mr. M. Ravindranath, Executive Director of AM/NS India (Vizag Steel).

Speaking on the occasion, VIIMS Director Dr. V. Manmadha Rao said:

"The installation of this solar power plant will generate approximately 6,000 units of electricity for the VIIMS hospital. This will result in a reduction of up to ₹1,000 in the average monthly electricity bill. This project will be highly beneficial for environmental conservation and for alleviating the hospital's financial burden.

The cooling towers at the site already had a capacity of 220 kW; now, with the addition of the 50 kW plant, the capacity has increased to 270 kW. In the future, more solar plants will be installed, and CER funds will continue to be utilized to support significant environmental initiatives," said ED Ravindranath.
