Visakhapatnam: Indian News Times:Today, on the occasion of World Population Day, Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao, the District Medical and Health Officer, flagged off a rally at the DMHO office. The rally proceeded via Satyam Junction and concluded back at the DMHO office.
The rally was conducted with the slogan: "Let us maintain a gap between children—let us build a healthy and happy family." Speaking on the occasion, Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao instructed ANMs and ASHA workers from Urban and Primary Health Centres to create public awareness regarding temporary family planning methods—such as PPIUCD, oral contraceptive pills, injectable contraceptives, and condoms—not only on World Population Day but throughout the year.
Speaking next, the District Extension and Media Officer, Mr. B. Nageswara Rao, advised on the importance of preventing teenage pregnancies and urged those married after the age of 20 to adopt family planning and temporary contraceptive methods. Subsequently, the In-charge District Statistics Officer, Mr. P. Ramesh, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for pregnant women to consume nutritious food and adhere to vaccination schedules; he also recommended the use of temporary contraceptive methods such as oral contraceptive pills and PPIUCD. A lucky dip was then conducted by the District Medical and Health Officer in the presence of district program officers and paramedical staff. Winners selected in the lucky dip included Dr. K. Harika (King George Hospital) as Best Gynecologist (prize: ₹8,000) and Dr. Sridhar (King George Hospital) as Best Vasectomy Surgeon (prize: ₹7,000). Parents with more than three children—Smt. Uppada Umadevi (K. Mulagapadu), Smt. Mamidi Manga (Gambhiram), and Smt. Varapula Paidiraju Devi (Kusulavada)—were awarded ₹5,000 each. Awards of ₹5,000 were also given to two individuals each for PPIUCD, Antara (injectable contraceptive), and NSV (Non-Scalpel Vasectomy) procedures. Additionally, Smt. Bhagyalakshmi (ANM, Anandapuram Primary Health Centre) received ₹2,500 as the Best ANM. MLHP Soundarya, RMNCH Counselor P. Vanitha (King George Hospital), and ASHA worker P. Varalakshmi received a cash prize of ₹2,500.
Participants in the event included Dr. Lucy (District Immunization Officer), Dr. B. Umavathi (DPMO), Sri B. Nageswara Rao (DEMO), Dr. Harika (RBSK District Coordinator), Dr. N.V. Samatha (Women's Health Officer), District Program Officers, Smt. M. Satyavathi (DPHNO), Sri Vardhan (DSO), Sri Sasi Bhushan (DPO-NHM), the Epidemiologist, Medical and Health Office staff, students from the Government Nursing College, and Sri Nagabhushanam (AMO).
