Visakhapatnam :Indian News Times: July 20:The Department of Commerce and Management (DCM), in collaboration with IQAC, St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), Visakhapatnam, inaugurated the Two-Day National Seminar on “Smart Governance & Systems: Driving the Future of Commerce, Management and Taxation” on Monday at the College Seminar Hall in hybrid mode.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries following the prayer song.
Dr. K. Rajani, Head, Department of Commerce and Management and Convenor of the seminar, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of smart governance, artificial intelligence, innovation, and tax reforms in today’s rapidly evolving world. She stated that the seminar had been conceived as a platform to deliberate on contemporary issues influencing the fields of commerce, management, and taxation.
Presiding over the inaugural session, Dr. Sr. Shyji P.D., Principal, St. Joseph’s College for Women (A), reiterated the institution’s commitment to quality education, research, and academic excellence. She observed that smart governance and ethical leadership would play a vital role in building sustainable institutions and empowered societies.
Chief Guest Prof. V. Balamohandas, President, Gandhi Centre, Visakhapatnam, and Former Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University, delivered an enlightening address on the significance of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He explained how GST had transformed India’s indirect tax regime by enhancing transparency, simplifying tax compliance, and improving ease of doing business. He further emphasized the need for students and professionals to remain updated on emerging trends in taxation and public policy.
Guest of Honour Prof. S. Rajani, Former Principal and Head, Department of Management, Gayatri Vidya Parishad College for Degree and P.G. Courses (A), Visakhapatnam, spoke on the importance of values, leadership qualities, and lifelong learning in management education.
The inaugural session concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Jyoti, Co-Convenor, who thanked the dignitaries, Principal, Management, IQAC, faculty members, participants, and student volunteers for their support in making the programme a success.
More than 70 academicians, researchers, and students from various institutions participated enthusiastically in the programme. IQAC Coordinator Dr. Bhaskara Sudha, along with faculty members of the Department of Commerce and Management—Pavani, Pratyusha, Naomi, and Satish—were present on the occasion.
Dr. P.K. Jayalakshmi, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the College, stated that the seminar would feature technical sessions, paper presentations, and deliberations on contemporary themes over the next two days.On the occasion, the seminar proceedings titled “Josephine Quest” were formally released by the Chief Guest, Prof. V. Balamohandas. The publication showcased the scholarly contributions and research papers presented at the seminar.
In a noteworthy gesture, Prof. V. Balamohandas presented two volumes of his “Gandhi Short Stories” to Dr. P.K. Jayalakshmi, Public Relations Officer of the College, for translation into Hindi. He also donated several of his literary works to the College Library, enriching its collection and encouraging literary and Gandhian studies among students and faculty members
