World-Class Life-Saving Procedure Gives New Hope to Tiny Premature Baby with Rare Brain Vascular Malformation*
Visakhapatnam: Indian News Times: Medicover Woman & Child Hospital, Visakhapatnam, has successfully performed a highly complex, life-saving neurovascular procedure on a premature baby weighing just 1.7 kg, diagnosed with the extremely rare Vein of Galen Malformation (VoGM). The achievement was made possible through the expertise of the hospital's multidisciplinary neonatal team in collaboration with renowned Interventional Neurovascular Specialist Dr. Siva Sankar Dalai.
Vein of Galen Malformation is a rare congenital brain vascular disorder in which abnormal blood vessels allow blood to flow directly from arteries into veins, placing tremendous strain on the baby's heart. Without timely intervention, the condition can lead to severe heart failure, respiratory distress, multiple organ dysfunction, and a high risk of mortality.
The condition was diagnosed during late pregnancy in an IVF-conceived baby, allowing the medical team to plan the delivery and postnatal care well in advance. Following premature birth, the baby was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where despite intensive medical management, the infant developed worsening high-output cardiac failure and required ventilator support.
Under the leadership of Dr. Sunil Kishore, Chief Neonatologist, a multidisciplinary team closely monitored the baby's condition and performed a highly specialized endovascular embolization on the fifth day of life. Despite the significant technical challenges of operating on a 1.7 kg premature infant, Dr. Siva Sankar Dalai successfully embolized the abnormal blood vessels without major complications.
Following the procedure, the baby's heart function improved steadily, ventilator support was withdrawn, feeding was established, and the infant made encouraging neurological recovery before being discharged home in stable condition.
The core NICU team involved in the baby's care included Dr. Sunil Kishore, Dr. Mounika, Dr. Priyanka, and Dr. Vijay, with the neurovascular intervention led by Dr. Siva Sankar Dalai.
This remarkable success highlights Medicover Woman & Child Hospital's commitment to delivering world-class neonatal care through advanced technology, specialized expertise, and seamless multidisciplinary collaboration, offering hope to families facing rare and life-threatening neonatal conditions.
