Visakhapatnam Poised to Emerge as a Global AI Hub with Google’s Landmark Data Centre Project* _*Foundation stone ceremony signals a defining inflection point in Andhra Pradesh’s technological and economic trajectory*_ *-Palla Srinivasa Rao*

Visakhapatnam, April 26:*In what is being positioned as a defining moment in Andhra Pradesh’s technological trajectory, the port city of Visakhapatnam is poised to host the foundation-laying ceremony on 28th April a major data centre project by Google, with preparations now in their final stages.

Announcing the development, Palla Srinivasa Rao said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project, which is expected to entail an investment of approximately $15 billion (₹1.35 lakh crore). Spread across nearly 601 acres, the facility is slated for completion by July 2028.

Beyond its scale, the project is being framed as a catalyst for structural economic transformation, with the potential to generate employment on a significant scale while strengthening the State’s digital infrastructure backbone.

*A city on the cusp of reinvention*

Mr. Srinivasa Rao observed that the initiative would fundamentally alter Visakhapatnam’s urban and economic contours. “With world-class technological infrastructure, large-scale investments, and a proliferation of IT-driven industries, Visakhapatnam is on course to emerge as a global AI hub,” he said, suggesting that the city could soon rank among India’s foremost technology centres.

He added that the project would act as a growth engine for North Andhra, with far-reaching implications for youth employment and regional development, characterising it as a “game changer” in both economic and social terms.

*Leadership narrative and policy positioning*

Attributing the project’s realisation to policy continuity and administrative agility, Mr. Rao credited Mr. Naidu’s governance approach—marked by investor-friendly frameworks and a proactive engagement model—for attracting global technology majors. He described the Chief Minister as a leader capable of translating long-term vision into executable outcomes.

He also highlighted the role of IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh, noting that sustained engagement with global investors, coupled with strategic foresight and expedited execution, had been instrumental in securing the investment.

The State government’s emphasis on a dual framework—“speed of doing business” alongside “speed of delivering governance”—was cited as a distinguishing feature of its administrative model. In this context, Mr. Rao pointed to the Business Reformer Award conferred by The Economic Times as indicative of governance efficiency.

*Long-term vision and sectoral ambitions*

The project aligns with the State’s broader ambition of positioning itself as a global hub across sectors such as information technology, electronics, green energy, and horticulture. Mr. Rao noted that while earlier policy frameworks laid the groundwork for development, the current long-term vision seeks to place Andhra Pradesh among the country’s leading growth engines in the coming decades.

*Beyond infrastructure: a generational opportunity*

Emphasising the wider developmental spillover, Mr. Rao said the project would accelerate infrastructure creation across North Andhra while expanding access to employment and skill development. Exposure to advanced technologies, he added, would enable the region’s youth to integrate with global opportunity networks.

He underscored that the initiative must be viewed not merely as a data centre project, but as a milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s transition into a technology-led growth era. The investment by Google, he said, would further consolidate the State’s position on the global investment map, marking a significant inflection point in its economic evolution.
