question often asked of retirees is:
“How do you pass the time after retirement?”
To this, a retired gentleman replied:
“Let me tell you about an incident that happened yesterday…”
My wife and I went to a large jewelry showroom.
We were back out in just 5 minutes!
As we stepped out, we saw a traffic policeman standing near our car right in front of the showroom, holding his challan book.
Upon seeing us, he immediately said:
— “Pay a fine of ₹1,000!”
We pleaded:
— “Sir, we were inside for only 5 minutes… please let us off this time!”
He retorted:
— “Everyone says the same thing! You’ll only learn your lesson when it costs you ₹1,000 out of your own pocket!”
Then I said:
— “I am a retired man… at least show some respect for my gray hair!”
At first, he wouldn't budge.
Then he said:
— “You drive around in a car worth lakhs and buy jewelry, yet you’re haggling over ₹1,000? Fine, out of respect for your age, just give me ₹200.”
Then I asked:
— “Will you give me a receipt for that ₹200?”
He replied:
— “If we go strictly by the rules, it will cost you the full ₹1,000!”
Then I argued:
— “How can you accept money without issuing a receipt? How is that right?”
Since I kept arguing for quite a while, the policeman eventually lost his temper. He said sternly:
— “You’ve been talking a lot about rules, haven’t you? Well, let me show you what the rules really are!”
Then he added:
— “Your car mirror is broken… the rear number plate is damaged too… and you don’t even have a PUC certificate! The total fine now comes to ₹8,000!”
At that point, I turned to my wife and said:
— “Why don’t *you* try talking to this policeman and make him understand?”
She, too, began to speak.
And just like that, another 30–40 minutes went by!
Just then, a city bus arrived…
We both hopped on the bus and drove away!
Because…
That car wasn’t ours to begin with!!!
The poor traffic policeman was left standing there, staring after us…
Now tell me…
Did I manage to pass the time after retirement, or didn’t I?
There are thousands of ways like this to pass the time during retirement…!
