Visakhaptnam :Indian News Times:The Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, celebrated its 57th Lab Raising Day on 20 August 2026, marking more than five decades of dedicated service to the nation in the field of defence research and technology development.
NSTL is engaged in the development of underwater weapons, stealth technologies and advanced hydrodynamic technologies, addressing critical requirements of the Indian navy. Its sustained efforts in indigenous technology development have contributed significantly towards enhancing the operational capabilities and self-reliance of the Indian Navy. With a strong focus on innovation, indigenisation and technological excellence, NSTL remains committed to developing and delivering cutting-edge and futuristic technologies, thereby contributing to the vision of a self-reliant and technologically advanced Indian defence sector.
In his welcome address, Shri B. Mohana Rao, Scientist ‘G’ and Chairman, LRDC-2026, welcomed the gathering. Dr. H. N. Das, Scientist ‘H’ and Chairman, Works Committee, presented the annual report highlighting the various activities undertaken by the Works Committee during the year, particularly the social service initiatives carried out with the support of the NSTL Civil Employees Union, JCM-IV, Works Committee and NSTL fraternity. Shri Sunil, President, NSTL Civil Employees Union, G Nagabhushanam, Secretary works committee briefly highlighted the social service and welfare activities undertaken by NSTL during the previous year.
The Chief Guest, Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, AVSM, NM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, in the presence of Dr. R. Balamuralikrishnan, Distinguished Scientist & Director General, Naval Systems & Materials (NS&M) and Dr. Abraham Varughese, Outstanding Scientist & Director, NSTL, appreciated Team NSTL for its significant contribution towards strengthening indigenous capabilities in naval stealth and expressed confidence that the Indian Navy would continue to look towards NSTL for the development of more indigenous technologies and products.Dr. R. Balamuralikrishnan, in his address, emphasized NSTL’s responsibility to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy with high-quality indigenous technologies. He encouraged NSTL to mentor Indian industries in developing world-class products in line with global standards and highlighted the need for continuous technological upgradation. He also appreciated NSTL for its talented and dedicated workforce.
Dr. Abraham Varughese, Outstanding Scientist & Director, NSTL, highlighted the laboratory’s continued efforts in research and development, with a focus on addressing the present and future requirements of Indian navy. He further emphasised NSTL’s commitmentstrengthening Aatmanirbhar Bharat by developing indigenous technologies and contributing towards self-reliance in naval warfare capabilities.On the occasion, personnel who completed 25 years of service were felicitated. Commendation Awards were presented to deserving employees, while Special Awards were also conferred on personnel for their significant contributions during sea trials.
