Infrastructure upgrade enhances line capacity on the critical Samalkot–Duvvada section, increases passenger comfort
South Coast Railway has commissioned a new state-of-the-art signalling system and an additional loop line at Gullipadu (GLU) station on the Vijayawada–Duvvada section, replacing the station’s decades-old manual signalling panel.
As part of the project, an additional 955-metre loop line has been laid, while the existing loop line has been extended by 340 metres, making it 1,026 metres long. The work involved installation of three new track switches, shifting of two existing track switches and removal of one-track switch located on a curve.
The additional track and crossings have also been electrified, further enhancing the operational flexibility of the station. The increased loop line capacity will facilitate smooth reception, dispatch and regulation of trains, particularly during periods of heavy traffic, thereby reducing operational constraints and supporting better punctuality.
Further, a new Medha MEI634 Electronic Interlocking System has been commissioned at Gullipadu, replacing the station’s ageing mechanical signaling panel with modern, computer-based equipment. This is the first installation of the Medha MEI634 E
lectronic Interlocking System on South Coast Railway. The new system is more compact, reliable and easier to maintain.
As part of the signaling upgrade, an automatic electrically operated lifting barrier has also been installed in place of the earlier manually operated lock boom. An Emergency Sliding Boom has additionally been provided, enabling faster and safer operation of the level crossing for road traffic.
General Manager, South Coast Railway, complemented the Engineering, Signalling, Electrical/Traction Distribution and Operations branch teams for successfully executing and commissioning the complex work within the stipulated time and with minimal impact on passenger services.
