Visakhapatnam: On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, students of St. Joseph’s College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, organised an innovative environmental awareness programme to highlight the harmful effects of plastic pollution. Under the RRR Club, the students prepared eco-friendly seed rakhis as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic rakhis.
Principal Dr. Sr. Shyji P.D. encouraged the initiative and guided the students to spread awareness about environmental protection. Following her directions, Dr. D. Aditya Deepthi, RRR Club Coordinator, accompanied the students to the awareness programme and coordinated the activities.
The students explained that plastic rakhis are non-biodegradable and contribute to environmental pollution. They highlighted the importance of reducing plastic use and choosing eco-friendly alternatives, while promoting seed rakhis as a meaningful way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan responsibly.
As part of the programme, the students visited GVMC Model School, Karasa, where they interacted with school students and explained the harmful effects of plastic pollution. They created awareness about reducing the use of plastic, choosing eco-friendly products and disposing of plastic waste responsibly.
The students also explained the special feature of seed rakhis. After Raksha Bandhan, the rakhis can be planted in the soil, allowing the seeds embedded in them to germinate and grow into plants. Through the message “Let us protect not only our brothers and sisters, but also our Mother Nature,” the students highlighted the connection between celebration and environmental responsibility.
The innovative initiative was well received by the school students and helped create awareness about sustainable practices and environmental protection.
