Visakhapatnam- Indian News Times -High-capacity freight network strengthens logistics efficiency, industrial connectivity and sustainable transportation
India’s freight transportation ecosystem is undergoing a major transformation with the operationalisation of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network. Developed by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), the DFC network is designed to provide high-capacity, efficient and reliable rail connectivity between major industrial, manufacturing, logistics and consumption centres.
The network comprises the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), connecting New Sahnewal in Punjab with New Sonnagar in Bihar, and the 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with New JNPT in Maharashtra. Together, the two corridors constitute a 2,843-km high-capacity freight railway network.
A major milestone was achieved on 31 March 2026, with the completion of the approximately 102-km Vaitarna–JNPT section, bringing the entire WDFC into operation. This has enabled seamless movement of freight trains, including double-stack container trains, up to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT), strengthening connectivity between the country’s major production and consumption centres and its western maritime gateway.
DFC Network Operating at Scale*
The scale of DFC operations reflects its growing importance in India’s logistics ecosystem. As of 31 August 2026, DFCCIL had handled approximately 5.21 lakh freight train trips, averaging around 435 trains per day. These operations have generated approximately 658 billion Gross Tonne Kilometres (GTKM) and 360 billion Net Tonne Kilometres (NTKM), demonstrating the substantial freight-handling capability of the dedicated network.
The DFC is not merely adding railway capacity but multiplying freight productivity, carrying over 14% of railway freight on just 4% of the railway network.
*Driving Logistics Efficiency and Economic Growth*By separating freight operations from passenger-dominated routes, DFCs provide greater operational flexibility and release capacity on the conventional railway network. Faster and more predictable freight movement can reduce logistics costs, improve supply-chain reliability and support manufacturing competitiveness.
The corridors also strengthen multimodal connectivity with ports, highways, logistics parks, industrial clusters and Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs). The development of GCTs is facilitating stronger first-mile and last-mile connectivity while encouraging private-sector participation in logistics infrastructure.
Innovative freight products are further expanding the customer base. The Truck-on-Train (ToT) service between New Palanpur and New Rewari provides a rail-based alternative for long-distance movement of commercial vehicles. During FY 2025–26, the service generated ₹49.10 crore revenue. The Joint Parcel Product–Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) is also facilitating time-bound parcel and e-commerce freight movement through digital booking and cargo aggregation.
*Benefits for the Nation and Society*DFC operations are expected to reduce dependence on road freight, ease highway congestion, improve road safety and lower diesel consumption. Electrified freight movement also contributes to reduced greenhouse-gas emissions and supports India’s broader sustainability objectives. Dedicated freight capacity enables Indian Railways to carry more freight without being constrained by passenger traffic, while improving the potential for faster and more punctual passenger services on conventional routes.
The network also supports employment generation, logistics-park development, industrial investment and balanced regional growth. Faster and more reliable connectivity with ports strengthens India’s export competitiveness and facilitates integration with global supply chains.
With WDFC now fully operational, the focus is shifting towards capacity utilisation, customer acquisition, feeder connectivity, multimodal integration and innovative freight services. The DFC network is thus emerging as a new architecture for Indian freight—supporting a more efficient, resilient, competitive and sustainable logistics ecosystem.
