Visakhapatnam -Indian News Times -Today, on September 10, 2026, District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao organized an awareness rally at the Swarnabharati Urban Primary Health Centre as part of World Suicide Prevention Week. The event featured seminars conducted by mental health experts and included the chanting of slogans such as "Say No to Suicide – Embrace a Full Life." Speaking on the occasion, the DMHO noted that World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10. This day has been observed since 2003 to raise global awareness about suicide prevention. Its primary objective is to dispel the silence, stigma, and misconceptions surrounding suicide and to encourage open, compassionate conversations. He emphasized the need for everyone to be aware of mental health and suicide prevention measures; he urged the public to encourage anyone facing mental health struggles to utilize the mental health services provided by the government. 

These services are completely free of charge, and free advice and guidance can be obtained by calling the designated helpline number.  A rally was organized with the participation of Programme Officer Dr. Harika, Medical Officer Dr. Siri, and the staff. As part of this initiative, and in accordance with the directives of the Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare, 'Gatekeeper Training' was provided to all medical staff. Additionally, awareness programs regarding suicide prevention were conducted for students at GITAM Medical College and the Government Degree College.
