Anesthesia: A Life-Saving Shield During Surgery... World Anesthesia Day*

Visakhapatnam, October 16:* Dr. Donkada Rajasekhar, Director of Anesthesiology at Medicover Hospitals, stated that the role of an anesthesiologist is just as crucial as the surgeon's skill in ensuring the success of a surgery.

Anesthesiologists perform vital responsibilities—ranging from managing pain to continuously monitoring a patient’s vital bodily functions throughout the surgical procedure. In modern medicine, anesthesia serves as a fundamental pillar for safe surgery.

World Anesthesia Day is observed annually on October 16. This date commemorates a historic event in 1846, when ether anesthesia was used for the first time during a public surgical procedure. Since then, the field of anesthesia has made significant advancements, playing a pivotal role in enabling complex surgeries.

The responsibilities of an anesthesiologist begin well before the surgery itself. They evaluate the patient’s overall health, medical history, existing allergies, and current medications to determine the most appropriate anesthesia approach. During the surgery, they continuously monitor the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and blood oxygen levels.  Managing post-operative pain and ensuring the patient’s safe recovery are also part of their responsibilities.

The role of anesthesiologists becomes even more critical during heart and brain surgeries, emergency trauma care, and complex childbirths. Through the use of modern equipment, advanced monitoring techniques, and medical expertise, risks associated with anesthesia can be minimized; however, the level of risk may vary depending on the patient's individual health condition.

Before undergoing surgery, patients should inform their doctors about any existing health issues, allergies, and the medications they are currently taking. They should also discuss any fears or concerns they may have regarding anesthesia with their medical team.

On the occasion of World Anesthesia Day, it is essential to recognize the services of anesthesiologists—who play a pivotal role in the success of surgeries and the protection of patients' lives—and to raise public awareness about safe
