In response to the nationwide call for ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) – 2026, South Coast Railway (SCoR) observed a mega cleanliness and awareness drive today at Visakhapatnam Railway Station. Shri Sandeep Mathur, General Manager, South Coast Railway, personally led the drive, joined by Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs), senior officers, and staff members, actively participating in Shramdaan under the national theme of ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’.

The intensive cleanliness campaign commenced at the Gnanapuram circulating and station entry area, covering circulating paths, and adjoining premises. Following the shramdaan, the General Manager conducted a comprehensive cleanliness inspection across the station, with a specific focus on Platform No. 8.

Emphasising mechanised sanitation over conventional methods, Shri Sandeep Mathur personally inspected the functioning of station sanitation implements. He reviewed the performance of ride-on heavy-duty scrubber-driers, high-pressure jet cleaners, and mechanized floor sweepers that enable staff to swiftly and continuously scrub platform surfaces without obstructing passenger flow. The General Manager verified their operational efficiency, chemical-free scrubbing mechanisms, and maintenance schedules to ensure optimal platform shine and passenger hygiene.

A newly introduced Electrically Operated Compaction Litter Bin facility was formally inaugurated by a station Safai Mitra in the presence of GM Shri Sandeep Mathur.

Shri Mathur inspected vital passenger interface areas including drinking water booths, waiting halls, catering stalls, foot overbridges, and track beds. Reviewing the procedures of segregation at source, handling, and final disposal of solid waste, he instructed officials to adopt modern, scientific disposal mechanisms.

To curb irresponsible littering, the General Manager directed the station administration and Railway Protection Force (RPF) to enforce strict anti-littering monitoring through the station CCTV surveillance network and levy deterrent spot fines against offenders.

Passenger Interaction & Upcoming Green Drives

During the inspection, the General Manager interacted directly with travelling passengers on the platforms, seeking real-time feedback on station cleanliness and amenities. He appealed to passengers to act as active partners in the Swachh Bharat mission by refraining from littering tracks and concourses and utilizing designated segregated waste bins.

Further, South Coast Railway will conduct, a mega plantation drive under the initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, as part of the ongoing Swachhata campaign, will be organized at the newly constructed Zonal Office Building complex at Mudasarlova, Visakhapatnam tomorrow on 02.10.2026.
